Organised anti-gender mobilisation in Armenia is a relatively recent phenomenon, emerging only in 2013 when progressive legislation first entered the political agenda and provided a target to oppose. Its trajectory maps closely onto external geopolitical pressures: the 2013–2014 campaigns against the gender equality law and LGBTIQ+ visibility coincided with Armenia’s pivot towards the Eurasian Economic Union and bore the hallmarks of Russian-backed disinformation, with identical narratives circulating simultaneously in Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine. The peak of mobilisation came in 2019, when the Istanbul Convention and trans visibility triggered a coalitional campaign uniting nationalist civic initiatives, the Armenian Apostolic Church, opposition parliamentarians and Russian-aligned media. After a period of reduced mobilisation driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, anti-gender positions were absorbed into broader nationalist and anti-Western mobilisation, culminating in the 2024 “Tavush for the Motherland” movement. Anti-gender rhetoric has thereby become less visible as a standalone agenda while remaining embedded within conservative and church-nationalist politics.
