The trajectory of anti-gender activity in Finland has moved from marginal religious conservatism to meaningful institutional presence. Through the 2000s, resistance to LGBTIQ+ equality remained largely confined to parliamentary minorities — the Christian Democrats and, increasingly, the Finns Party. The marriage equality debate of 2013–2017 was the first catalytic moment, producing Finland’s first sustained anti-gender civil society organisation. Since the formation of the Orpo coalition in 2023 — the most right-wing government since the Second World War — anti-gender positions have moved from parliamentary opposition into ministerial conduct, with the Finns Party using executive power to block equality measures, boycott Pride and restrict LGBTIQ+ visibility across public institutions. Inclusive sex education and LGBTIQ+ content in schools have become a primary target, with coordinated parliamentary and municipal campaigns seeking to restrict NGO-led school visits.
