The trajectory of anti-gender activity in San Marino over the last decades reflects a shift from Church-led institutional resistance to a more organised civil society mobilisation. Throughout the 2000s and 2010s, the Diocese of San Marino-Montefeltro and the politically dominant Partito Democratico Cristiano Sammarinese operated as the primary barriers to reform, blocking abortion legislation and same-sex family recognition through parliamentary majorities and episcopal pressure. The 2021 abortion referendum marked a turning point: the No campaign was coordinated by Uno di Noi, an ad hoc committee that subsequently transformed into a permanent anti-gender organisation, progressively extending its activity from reproductive rights to opposition to gender-inclusive education and LGBTIQ+ visibility. San Marino’s anti-gender movement remains relatively limited in scale but increasingly connected to Italian anti-gender networks, whose rhetorical frames and legislative models it actively imports.
