Each dot on this chart represents one of the 47 countries, placed by two scores running from 0 to 4. Contamination (horizontal axis) measures how far the anti-gender movement has spread through a country’s society — its organisations, its street and online presence, its hold on public debate. Impact (vertical axis) measures how far it has reshaped the country’s laws, policies and institutions. Reading the two together for the last period (2021-2025) is what defines the seven country groups shown in colour, from those where the movement is barely present (bottom left) to those where it has captured the state (top right). Countries low on both measures are those less affected by the anti-gender movement;  those high on both are where the anti-gender movement has captured the state apparatus.

How each country moved through the contamination and impact space

This chart uses the same two measures as the evolution of anti-gender activity — contamination (horizontal axis) for how far the anti-gender movement has spread through a country’s society, and impact (vertical axis) for how far it has reshaped that country’s laws and institutions, each scored from 0 to 4. Here, instead of a single snapshot, each country is drawn as a line tracing its path across the five periods from 2001 to 2025. The line shows where a country began, how far it travelled and in which direction: a long line reaching towards the top right marks a country transformed over the twenty-five years, while a short one near the bottom left marks a country where little changed. Because contamination generally rises before impact, most trajectories move right before they move up — the anti-gender movement spreading through society before it reshapes the law.

Contamination (scored 0 to 4) captures how far the anti-gender movement has spread through a country’s society — its organisations, its street and online presence, its hold on public debate — while the horizontal axis runs through the five periods from 2001 to 2025. Each line represents one country, so its shape shows how the anti-gender movement grew: a line climbing steeply marks a country where contamination spread fast, a flat low line a country where the anti-gender movement gained little ground, and an occasional dip a period in which it receded. Read together, the lines show that contamination has risen everywhere over the twenty-five years, though at very different speeds and starting at different times.

Impact (scored 0 to 4) captures how far the anti-gender movement has reshaped a country’s laws, policies and institutions — turning its aims into binding measures — while the horizontal axis runs through the five periods from 2001 to 2025. Each line represents one country, so its shape shows how far the anti-gender movement has succeeded in changing the law: a line climbing steeply marks a country where impact grew fast, a flat low line a country where the anti-gender movement won little institutional ground, and an occasional dip a period in which impact receded. Read together, the lines show that impact has risen across most of the continent over the twenty-five years, though it has moved later and more unevenly than contamination.
