The Hate Review

Contamination measures how far the anti-gender movement has spread through a country’s society. It is built from three of the seven dimensions monitored — anti-gender organisations and networks, mobilisation and campaigns, and narratives and media — each rated by expert judgement for every five-year period and combined into a single contamination score on a scale from 0 to 4 (see Annex 1 of The Hate Review – Methodology for the scoring method). Each score is translated into a colour, with one colour for each half-point range of the scale, giving the eight bands shown half-point range of the scale, giving the eight bands shown on the maps and in the table.

The five maps below show the evolution of contamination across Europe from 2001 to 2025, one per period, with each country coloured according to its score. The summary table that follows gives every country’s contamination colour for each of the five periods.
